How to Find Your IP Address for Wi-Fi

Routers of the same brand often have the same IP address.
Routers of the same brand often have the same IP address.
An IP address is a long string of numbers or hexadecimals (numbers and letters) used to identify your business computer when you're online. In addition to your computer's IP address, there is also a separate IP address assigned to your wireless router. When setting up Wi-Fi Internet access on another device or troubleshooting a Wi-Fi connection, you may need to know the IP address of your computer, router or both. Mac and PC operating systems both provide users with the means to quickly locate computer and router IP address information.

Windows

Step 1
Click the "Start" button in the lower left of the computer screen.
Step 2
Click the Search box and type "cmd" (without quotes). Press the "Enter" key.
Step 3
Type "ipconfig" at the prompt in the pop-up Command window. Press "Enter."
Step 4
Write down the numbers and symbols listed next to "IPv4 Address" or "IPv6 Address." Usually there will be either an IPv4 or IPv6 address listed, but if there are both, either one will work. This number is your computer's IP address.
Step 5
Take down the number sequence next to "Default Gateway." This is your router's IP address.

Mac OSX

Step 1
Click the apple symbol in the upper left of the computer screen and choose "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu.
Step 2
Click "Network" to open the Network menu.
Step 3
Select "Ethernet" if the computer you are using is connected to the Internet via broadband with a cable, "AirPort" if it is connected wirelessly or "Internal Modem" if the computer accesses the Internet through a dial-up connection.
Step 4
Write down the number listed next to "Status." This is the computer's IP address. Note that the number will only be visible if the computer is connected to the Internet.
Step 5
Click "Advanced," then select the "TCP/IP" tab. The numbers listed next to "Router" denote the router's IP address.
